Card changes

The Amex Green Card is closed to new applicants and now goes by Classic Green

Applications stopped in July. Existing cardholders keep the card and the $150 fee.

In short

American Express stopped accepting applications for the Green Card in July 2026, removed it from its website, and renamed it Classic Green on 20 August 2026. Existing cardholders are unaffected.

American Express stopped taking applications for the Green Card in July 2026 and took it off its website. On 20 August 2026 it was renamed the Classic Green Card. The $150 annual fee and the 3x rates on eligible travel, transit and restaurant purchases were left unchanged.

Existing cardholders keep the card and its benefits. Amex has not said whether a redesigned Green product is coming.

It is not the only one

The Green joins the Amex EveryDay and EveryDay Preferred, both of which stopped taking applications on 25 September 2024 alongside the Cash Magnet. All three remain open to existing holders, and their cardmember agreements were updated in March 2026.

If you hold it

Run the numbers at each renewal. $150 for 3x on travel, transit and restaurants is a reasonable deal if those categories are where your money goes, and a poor one if they are not. A product change to another Amex card is usually possible; the number on the back of the card will tell you what you are eligible for.

If you were looking at the Green and found it gone, the closest currently available cards with a similar 3x travel-and-dining shape are the Citi Strata Premier at $95 and the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey at $95. Both are cheaper.
